Social Security hits 90

Survey shows Americans rely on the program but fret about its future

Nov. 6, 2025 – Earlier this year, we told you that OPERS is celebrating its 90th anniversary. OPERS actually predates Social Security, but the national retirement assistance program also turned 90 in 2025.

Many OPERS members also have worked in the private sector and thus are eligible to receive Social Security retirement. That benefit was enhanced in January, with the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act.

Since its creation in 1935, the Social Security program has provided essential income to many retirees, people with disabilities and surviving family members. It continues to shape how Americans think about financial security in retirement.

For decades, AARP has tracked public attitudes toward Social Security — how people view its purpose, its future and its importance to younger generations. This year’s report offers insights to how American adults 18 and older feel about the program.

Here’s what the 2025 survey revealed:

  • Social Security’s importance endures. Ninety-six percent of Americans say the program is important, with little variation by age or political choice.
  • Confidence is slipping. Just 36% of Americans are confident in Social Security’s future — down seven points from 2020. As in past years, confidence grows with age.
  • Retirees depend on it. Nearly two in three retired Americans say they rely heavily on Social Security income, while another 21% depend on it somewhat. Younger adults, especially those under 50, tend to underestimate how central it will be to their retirement.
  • Knowledge gaps persist. While most Americans believe they understand Social Security, many lack the detailed knowledge needed to make informed decisions about when to claim benefits.
  • Support for Social Security’s core values remains strong. The majority continue to back its founding principles — promoting the public interest, providing benefits to those who pay in, and recognizing Social Security as a promise America must keep.
