Benefit schedule set for 2021

Payments usually made on the first business day of each month

By Donna Castiglione, Ohio Public Employees Retirement System

Dec. 22, 2020 – If you’re an OPERS retiree, you receive a pension each month. Here’s when our retirees can expect to receive their pensions next year.

OPERS typically issues pension benefit payments on the first business day of the month. If that day falls on a weekend or holiday, we’ll issue the payment on the last business day of the previous month. The exception to this rule is in January when, for tax purposes, the payment must be issued on the first business day of the month.

Please make note of the payment dates for 2021 in the list below. You also can find this schedule posted on the OPERS website. Or, you can call us at the end of any month and listen to the automated “Fast Facts” message for these important dates. Simply press 2 for “Fast Facts.”

I am also wondering about march payment, (I see what the chart says but since my check is usually deposited at midnight, does this mean it will be deposited at midnight Sunday night or at midnight Friday or Saturday?

          Helen,

It is scheduled to be deposited on March 1. However, individual banks have their own policies, so we have heard of some depositing them before the announced dates.

      Dominga,

The stimulus payments are issued by the IRS, therefore you would need to contact the IRS to determine if they will require you new card information.

      Thank you,
      MGS

When will our January pay be available? January 3rd is a Sunday so will our deposit not credit until midnight and be available January 5th? I need to pay rent by the 4th or pay a late fee so I need to plan accordingly

My mortgage, medical insurance premiums, and utility payments all hit my bank account on the 1st of the month. But I won’t have any money until January 4, 2021. What am I supposed to do? Will OPERS pay all the daily fees the bank the charge for lack of funds?

      Jackie,

As we stated in the blog, because of tax rules we cannot make the payment for January in the previous month, which constitutes the previous year. This is a longstanding policy, and we relate this information to members annually.

This has always been a problem, unfortunately we can’t do anything about it. I don’t sweat the small stuff God’s got me.

      Lillian,

Sometimes banks make the deposits early. That is out of our control.

My grandmother passed away on January 25. Her family is wondering when she gets paid on February 1st, is that for the month of January or February? Thank you.

Tracy, The February 1st benefit would be for the month of February. In general if a member passes in January they would not be eligible for the February benefit.
